The Project

Step One:
Lit Mag

Off the Page Literary Magazine

Poets will submit their work based on prompts from the poems of three well-known contemporary poets. Poems accepted to the magazine will be inspired by the craft, form, or topic of one of the prompts. Our team of readers and editors will work to select poems over the course of the first few months of the project.

Collaboration Process

In this stage of the development of the exhibition, poets will be paired with artist who work in different media. These pairs will meet on a regular basis to discuss the poets' vision for a piece based on their poem, and the artists will craft textile pieces, video and mixed media installations, and more. The hope for this collaboration process is that both poets and artists will expand their art practice as they learn from and are inspired by one another.

Off the Page Exhibition

Off the Page aims to exhibit the art created alongside the poems that inspired it in a space run by a community-based arts organization in Chicago. The exhibition's programming will include a reading as part of the opening night, with other opportunities to engage with poetry such as workshops, artist talks, and a poetry slam. We will collaborate with other poetry and art organizers to put together this programming.
